A Brief Memory of Obbo Terfa Dibaba’s Dedication to Oromo Cause

I am deeply saddened by the news of  Obbo Terfa Dibaba’s death.  Obbo Terfa was a true Oromo nationalist, a man of sterling integrity,  a loyal  family man,  a dedicated relief worker, and trustworthy individual.    I met  Obbo Terfa  and his loving wife Addee Arfase Gamada for the first time at the meeting of the  Union of  Oromo Students  in Europe 37 years ago  and later on  worked  closely with him for more than twenty years when he was serving  as  a representative of the  Oromo Relief Association based in Germany.  The last time I communicated with Obbo Terfa was when he sent me a copy of the book he wrote entitled, “It is a Long Way-A reflection on the history of the Oromo Relief Associaton (ORA).”

Obbo Terfa was a humble  and compassionate  person  who  loved his people and cared deeply about the plight of  Oromo  Refugees.  He made  significant contributions to the Oromo cause and stayed true to the end to the principles he believed.    In the early days when there were very few Oromos in diaspora, Obbo Terfa and Addee Arfase’s home was a resting place for many  newly arriving refugees, and Oromo  freedom fighters living in Germany and in transit.

Obbo Terfa  dedicated his entire life by providing  humanitarian assistance to  Oromo refugees in  a variety of countries, including  the Sudan, Kenya, Somalia  Djibuti and Germany since the  Oromo Relief Association was legally recognized as a humanitarian Organization in 1979.   He was among the first Oromo nationalists I know of who  made o the world  aware of  Oromo sufferings under the yolk of the  Abyssinian regime.   Obbo Terfa spent most of his time travelling  back and forth between Germany and East African countries, visiting refugee camps, advocating, fundraising and educating Europeans, Africans and Americans about the predicament  of Oromo Refugees.    Obbo Terfa’s  more than 40   years of  dedicated  services have  saved the lives of thousands Oromo refugees, internally displaced Oromos,  families of Oromo political prisoners and freedom fighter.  Among the many  monumental contributions of Obbo Terfa’s – which history may record one day – is his unflinching dedication to successfully saving/rescuing some Oromo heroes’ very lives  at  dangerous moments.    Obbo Terfa was a  selfless and dedicated professional. He was  highly respected by people privileged to know and work with him, and  by many non-governmental  and governmental  humanitarian organizations  around the world.  His passing is a big loss  not only to  his beloved family, and friends,  but also  to the entire Oromo Nation. We  are already missing him deeply.  May  his soul rest in peace!  May God comfort his family.

It is with the deepest sorrow that the OLF announces the passing of Tarfa Dibaba on 29th July 2016 at the age of 76. Tarfa Dibaba was one of the founders and a senior member of OLF leadership. He was one of the early educated few that helped in advancing Oromo national struggle that led to the present awakening. Until he took his last breath, he had never stopped encouraging his comrades not to waver from their set objective.

His indefatigable highly principled professional contribution ranged from the battlefields of Oromia to the refugee camps in Sudan, Kenya, Somalia, Yemen, Egypt and Djibouti, and to the diplomatic corridors of the capital cities of the most powerful nations, fighting for independence of Oromia.

We have lost a dear friend and a tremendously valued comrade. In Tarfa Dibaba the Oromo nation has lost a patriot, a giant human rights advocate, a charitable campaigner for rights of Oromo refugees as a founder and lifelong head of the Oromo Relief Association (ORA). In this regard, Tarfa Dibaba has not only saved thousands of life but also consoled and comforted hundreds of victims of torture and unimaginable cruelty in the hands of the enemies of the Oromo nation.

Tarfa Dibaba has survived by his beloved wife Arfase Gamada, their three children Yared, Benjamin and Talile, and grandchildren Gilcha, Hirtz-Dibaba, Jootee, Hawani and Yadani. Our hearts and prayers go to them.

The funeral ceremony will be announced by his family in due course.

May the almighty rest our comrade in eternal peace.

Oromia shall be free!

We are so sorry to hear the loss of this giant Oromo in Europe. It is really sad news. He will be remembered by many, beyond the oromo community worldwide, as a Person whose life has found its purpose in serving those who found themselves on the wrong side of life for just being an Oromo. Our heart goes out to the family. May he rest in peace.

I am in deep sadness when I read info. on the passing away of Tarfa Dibaba yesterday and I shared this sad news on face book with concerned Oromo nationals. He was an extraordinary Oromo devoted for Oromo cause not only in his great role in leading Oromo Relief organization but also in building Oromoness all his life. Socially he was a father, a friend and kind to all Oromos. In other words he had all true qualities of Oromuumaa.
I pray, you may rest in peace. I pass my deepest condolence to his family.

  1. I was deeply saddened when I heard of Obbo Tarfaa Dibaba’s passing. Obbo Tarfaa was a man of high integrity, consistency, and compassion who fought hard for the Oromo people and nation. As the father of ORA, he worked tirelessly to save Oromo refugees wherever they were throughout the globe. He was a father to many orphaned Oromo children in the refugee camps in the Sudan, Somalia, Djibouti, Kenya, and throughout Africa. He spent his entire life fighting for our people’s freedom, showing bravery until the very end. Oromia lost one of its most genuine and dedicated towering figures among Oromo leadership. Obbo Tarfaa’s life history will remain shinning on the front page of the Oromo national struggle. Obbo Tarfaa, we all will miss you greatly. May God bestow strength on his wife, Adee Arfaasee Gammada and his family. May his soul rest in peace.

  2. Obbo Terfa Dibaba was a true Oromo nationalist who committed his life to help Oromo refugees and to promote the Oromo national cause. I only knew him through his practical actions; I met him for more than two decades at the annual conferences of Oromo Studies Association in North America. He meticulously explained the dilemma and suffering of displaced Oromos in the Horn of Africa and beyond. When I have engaged in my various research projects, I have abundantly learned from his accumulated knowledge on this subject.

He dedicated his life to advance the Oromo national struggle. His death is a great lose for his family in particular and the Oromo nation in general. When many Oromo intellectuals were doing little or nothing in the West, this great man dedicated his intellect, energy and time to work for his people. Therefore, we should list him among our heroes and celebrate him.
