PRESS RELEASE

The stateless Oromo Persecuted at Home, Harassed Abroad

Australian Oromo Community in Victoria will be gathering at Spring Street and corner of Treasury Place, next to Victoria Parliament in a bid to express our grave concern and appeal to the recent tragedies on Oromo and other refugees from Horn of Africa. The recent killings of Oromo refugee in Libya and South Africa and displaced Oromo refugee Yemen due to war are heart breaking.

Oromo refugees, who have escaped the dire situation in their home country, faced daily terror at the hands of the Ethiopian regime. They have fled from the widespread extra-judicial killings, abductions and disappearances, removal from their ancestral land, torture and constant humiliations that has been going on for years. Hence, many Oromo refugees have been forced to flee from their homeland.

However, the intimidation and harressment of Oromo refugees continued to the extreem. On Sunday, 19th of April the terrorist group ISIS in Libyan released videos of the men being beheaded, and another group were being shot. As a community we describe the execution of those innocent refugees is absolutely barbaric and unacceptable. Similarly, the current situation of Oromo refugees in Yemen and South Africa gravely concerns us. As the result of war and conflict in Yemen and the wide-ranging spread of anti-immigration sentiment in South Africa, the current situation of Oromo refugee is terrifying. It is very disheartening to hear about this development of communal hatred on our refugee population, intolerance and politicization of religion.

Oromo refugees are experiencing agonising dreadful of human right violations in countries where they are seeking UNHCR protection as a refugee. The Ethiopian government is hunting these refugees in Yemen, even in the refugee camp while they are under UNHCR to forcefully take them back to Ethiopia by bribing security forces in the country.

Ethiopia’s human rights abuses are well documented by human rights watch and US state departments and the current Oromo protests has renewed support to launch an international investigation to bring the responsible perpetrators to justice.

In response, more than 10 international cities including Washington, Toronto, Oslo, Frankfurt and London have staged mass peace protests, picking up interest globally and trending heavily on social media. Many Oromo community members have also established emergency appeal and fundraising to support people who are in need.

On Friday, Australian Oromo community will call on the Australian government to urgently consult UNHCR and other international aid agencies to rescue Oromo refugees particularly, in Libya, Yemen and South Africa. It will also appeal to Australian governemnt to set an example by using its influence in the United Nations to put political, economic and diplomatic pressures upon the Ethiopian government to stop its continued attack on Oromo lives, their political organisations, educational establishments and the right to self-determination.

Members of Australian Oromo community in Victoria will be gathering at Spring Street and corner of Treasury Place, next to Victoria parliament in Melbourne on Friday 1st May at 10am.

  4. OROMIYA REGION IS THE MOST BENEFICIARY IN THE COUNTRY AT THE EXPENSE OF OTHER REGIONS. IMAGINE,ALMOST 70 PERCENT OF THE COUNTRY MANUFACTURING INDUSTRIES AND SERVICES ARE CONCENTRATED IN THE REGION. MODERN HIGH WAYS, EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY ESPECIALLY THE SHEWA OROMOS ARE THE MOST BENEFICIARY. SO,WHAT IS THE CRYING ? SO AS TO EXPLOIT THE REST 30 PERCENT. IT IS GREEDY ACT. WHAT ABOUT THE REST 60 PERCENT OF THE COUNTRY PEOPLE SHARE OR INTEREST? PLEASE,BE RATIONAL.

  5. Folks: statelessness and hopelessness is mainly in your specific victim role playing head. For now, Oromiya is as empowered as any other people in Ethiopia if NOT more. Absolutely it can be much better and for that we all have stop playing the foolish usual victim role playing and self dis empowering games but come together in new unity within diversity in order to promote the general Oromo interests of Oromumma and then step by step to something optimal. What would you do with “independence NOW”! lamentations after lamentations because you will only start slaughtering each other immediately after the so called Independence or else other outsiders waiting already on the wing will jump on and slaughter all of you even before you turn around to see what is happening. Let mother nature give the knowledge, wisdom and working vision. Amen! 🙂

  6. Dig-Inward,

Most of your arguments are utterly false and propagandist. In fact e-learning empowers underprivileged people who are not able to send their kinds to expensive and or location wise non available schools. Also employees who do not have the chance to attend formal schools due to their job can study any subject during their free and convenient times. E-education democratizes education just like the world wide web by going to people in areas where people are not able to going to the educational facilities and institutions. Only children of the rich may get education in most of these least developed countries while in many developed countries all children, whether rich or poor do have equal chance for education, specially in the Nordic countries. Even young people from many “developing” countries travel to the Nordic countries where they offered free and quality educations so that these educated people may become talented expert workers to better solve human problems as medical doctors, water engineers, social workers, lawyers, research scientists, architectures, nutrition scientists, etc. Don’t be afraid and envious if you have money making private school down there because the developed countries can even help you in your project with out being petty and envious empty ideological swan song signings of the last century. 🙂

  7. ” The stateless Oromo persecuted at home, harassed abroad “.

In my view of point, those who are being persecuted at home are not stateless as a writter of this article put it. Because, the Oromos at home are not refugees or immigrants. They are living on their ancestorial land Oromia and are being persecuted by occupiers or conquerers. And those who have outfluxed are called ” Stateless Refugees ” under the Geneva Convention of UNCHR.

Oromians must know that we are not ” Stateless “, we have State Oromia, but, we are under the occupation of the guns. Oromians and their economy are being abused by occupiers . The existance of the State Oromia is controlled by remote controller. Otherwise, Oromians living on their God given luxuriant land are not ” Stateless “.

  8. Some people need to consult their dictionaries before speaking in public. ‘Stateless’ means having no government of own – having no self-rule. State = Government and Its Governing Structure, not the region called ‘State of Oromia’.

I’m just laughing at ‘Oromian bateleur’ – I used to think this guy was better among the clueless Oromo activists roaming the cyberspace.

  9. Ha ha ha ! the nameless Habesh, are you still not recovered from the Eastern Festival, in which you have drunken so much mead to which too much rhamnus prinoides has been added ?

Here you are charged with uncontrollable emotion of soiling, than looking deeply into the existing matter of situation. You are talking what you got from your dictionaries, but I am talking about the reality. Read my comment carefully and try to explain it in a gentle manner. Otherwise, you are in allucination of ” Khat ” or the bubbling wort.

Your differenciating between the ” stateless ” and the ” state Oromia ” is based on confusion which you have in your mind. One cannot deny that Oromos had and have their own way of governing themselves, but have fallen to shrewding of Wayaane and OPDO. But you are denying this reality in the daylight. Odd, odd ! Again, I can clearly say, State Oromia is there and the only thing what Oromos need is to get rid of burden which is on their heads. Those who want to undermine it are, either the old-minded Habeshas or those radicals who wish to found the so called ” Dolati al- Islamiya Al-Oromiya “.

To those old minded Habeshas: ” You cannot solve a problem with the same THINKING that created it ”

    Albert Einstein

  10. The Oromos are not stateless like Gypses in Europe. Oromos have State Oromia for many years, but their instrument of governing their affairs has been kidnaped by abusers. A nameless commentator has tried to explain the different between ” Stateless ” and ” Government ” in his above comment, but he couldn’t verify his argument accurately than clucking and reechoing with his uncontrollable rage.

” State “, a socially or politically unified people occupying a definite territory, a nation. No one can deny it that Oromia is socially and politically unified as a nation with its own territory.

” Stateless ” = lacking of nationality, but Oromos are not lacking nationality.
” Government ” = is the state’s instrument or system of governing the citizens.

Although Oromia is existing as a ” State Oromia “, its instrument/system ( government ) is controlled by occupiers. Also one must not forget that, a state is permanent and the government is temporar.

  11. Stateless has a different meaning,

You are wrong deep down to your bones but Oromian bateleur is correct in my opinion.

We Oromos have a country both individually and jointly with others. This so called statelessness petty propaganda is only self depreciating victim role playing cry baby politics.

Those Oromos who are living in Oromia are not living under occupiers but under oppressors. Even that oppression is of our own making because we are divided, barking, pulling and pushing each other in many different directions. Oromos are very significant numerically, culturally, socially, economically, territorially, resource wise, etc. and they have to mobilize all of these resources and push for incremental development of government and governance in a way that is favorable to all round size of the Oromo people as to remove external oppressions which is partly imposed due to such tactless Oromo political propagandists calling for their stupid secession empty shouting and through that providing big and small counter forces all the instruments they need to oppress Oromos.

People think that if only they position their case among the so called helpless or “stateless nations” whatever that happens to mean, they may soon receive a state on a golden plate, not knowing the fact that ONLY significant powerful others or states can help in such significant matters. And why should they help Oromos forming clear majority in such matters since Oromos by default own the whole of Ethiopia for which they need to get united, man up and take over the challenges for the benefits of the national and international communities. 🙂

  12. senayt,

If you want to say something write it in full sentences and understandable clear language! Or else please don’t even write just to waste your time as well as other peoples scarce time. Voila!
